Big Techday 24: Dynamic Soaring - Pushing the Limits - Spencer Lisenby, DSKinetic
Просмотров 6749 часов назад
Dynamic Soaring - Pushing the Limits Dynamic Soaring is a flight technique that enables radio controlled gliders to reach unexpectedly high speeds. Over the last 23 years, the top speed for Dynamic Soaring has climbed from 156mph to the current record of 564mph (908kph). Our latest design pushes the limits, using swept wings to delay the onset of transonic drag rise, in hopes of recording a spe...

What a Computer Game Taught me about Software Architecture Factorio is a simulation game where you build a highly automated factory, producing the technology to eventually launch a rocket to space. Along the way, every new task will be manual at first, but you can (and will need to) automate it. I stumbled upon this game a few years ago, got hooked, and spent (way!) too many hours playing it. As Spencer said at the end of this talk you should go out and witness dynamic soaring in person if you get the opportunity. I was able to go out to Parker Mountain in California in October of 2023 and met Spencer, Bruce Tebo and a few other flyers. The highest speeds I saw that day were 400-450, wind gusting to about 45mph. But the videos cannot come close to conveying the incredible energy at work here; it's both violent and awe-inspiring. And even when breaking out the the DS circuit, Spencer will often just climb... Vertical and at the limit of visibility in a heartbeat. The speeds they are making with unpowered flight are incredible. Thanks Spencer!

Have you considered RTK Spencer? It is a very accurate positioning system, much better than GPS alone, and implemented in some drones for repeatable autopilot positioning. A constant live speed would really up the game for data. Someone in the community may be able to help with adapting it for your use, even with more base stations, possibly triangulating the position from the ground.

Marketing 101: - Tell people they stink => Sell deodorant - Tell people they are ugly => Sell makeup - Tell people they can be whatever gender they want to be => Sell plastic surgery and a lot of pills and therapy. - Tell people something scary => They follow radical populists - Tell people how scary deadlocks are => Sell a new language - Tell people how scary memory management is => Sell a new language. It is always the same template: A new language pops up to save us from the evil <fill in your topic here>. With the recent language explosion, I start to think, we need a time of consolidation. Instead of 20 new languages for 20 different evil problems, we need 1 modern language, in the same sense as back in the day, an ANSI standard consolidated all the LISP mutations into 1 standard: Common Lisp. Or that effort to create 1 functional language instead of 20 (Haskell). Also quite amusing: All "brand new languages" still have a printf facility - but what about audio standard APIs (application/file/network/device source and application/file/network/device sinks) and 2d/3d/UI graphics standard APIs, which are not as code bloated as Vulkan and not as daft as OpenGL, but actually practical? Really - no one appreciates your personal flavor of console.print() printf format write and whatever stuff, if all the other stuff is missing. Even more amusing is to ponder, how a modern printf "design" would look like: My bet is, it would have 4k lines of code of boiler plate fore you can get "hello world" out, involving CharsetFactories, EncodingManagers, ColorizerFlyWeightFactories and whatnot...

I worked on this for three years. Outfitted the survey vessel with an a frame and winch with 6 miles of one inch wire on it, USS Torque Balanced. Later on winches for power and instrumentation umbilicals. Difcficult to install on the lifting gear in thes moon pool. Hydraulic oil leaks every where , fireproof that rotted your shoes! Tried to change the concept to use compressed air and a column stabilized semi that would eliminate the entire motion compensation system including the gimbal. Later I invented the Apache Reelship and the MPSS.

2:30:00 I do not see the termination issue here. 'repeat a' in a sense does not terminate, but it is a perfectly total Haskell function. If LiquidHaskell requires lists to become shorter in a recursive call then it would prohibit 'repeat'. Imagine the recursive call to 'merge' would actually be a 'repeat'. Would this be ok? It would be, because the recursive branch already produced something and thus no infinite loop occurs. Thus I think, the initial definition of 'merge' should be accepted because in every branch there is either no recursion at all or the recursion only happens after producing new data.

Really amazing stuff, and the speaker did a phenomenal job at explaining it. One question I have is whether mapping over a list/traversable just to apply a newtype data constructor could be avoided in some way via type coercion (which is always doable for newtypes) and whether it ends up making a difference. I'm not an experienced haskeller but I'm guessing it would require some type family magic.
